Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest." Matthew 9:37-38
"His mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever He tells you.'" Jn 2:4
But doesn't the Lord of the harvest already know that He should send out laborers? Why ask?
Asking the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers is a gentle roundabout way of telling you to become a laborer of the harvest. What other prayer comes with an instant answer? Lord, send ... Me.
This mark forms us into God's children by bringing us into the family business.
Laborers of the harvest aren't cotton-pickers, they are farmers; they cultivate the soil around the plants, they fertilize and weed. They make sure the plants have enough water and sunlight to grow. They kill evil, parasitic bugs that threaten to destroy the harvest.
The harvest is Aspiring Immortals whom He planted in this world of ours. We need help. Admit it, we need water, fertilizer, and protection from evil forces. (think:Church) We should give it to each other, at least some of us must.
Most of us who focus on the mark with our psyches think that it just sits there in the middle of this big chaotic world waiting for us to get ready, aim, and fire. The truth be told, when we walk up close and look inside. That blessed mark of ours is actually a whole world in itself; it is a busy nucleus of life.
It is into that busy world Mark 39 calls us. We must join the family business of tending fellow aspiring immortal souls.
